Todd County, South Dakota - 2 September 2000
Nearest City, St. Francis, South Dakota, closest road, BIA route 30.
On September 2nd, 2000, at dusk, a female had reported seeing a strange animal
west of Spring Creek community on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. The
nearest town is St. Francis, S.D. The terrain is a Little White River
bottom, with timber background. The female witness was in route home with
her two children on a dirt road. She had come across something near a
large piece of tin that was next to the road, which has been there (Tin).
She said she saw a large black animal-man, hairy black in color with long
arms but thought her horses must have got out of her land. Where she saw
the animal, the grass was matted down but no tracks in the general area
were found. She was in radio contact with her boy friend via CB radio.
She said she backed up and drove toward the animal thinking it was a horse,
elk or cow. She said the weeds were approximately 3-5 feet tall. She realized
how tall the grass was and kept driving toward the animal. The witness
went on to say the animal stood up. She said at first she thought it was
a bear, but then said it was a large hairy man, long arms. She said she
left the scene in a hurry and called her boy friend and told him what
she had saw. A game warden was summoned and checked the area with the
boy friend and several others. The Rangers and the police department were
summoned. A complete investigation has been conducted by rangers and myself.
Nothing was found. Ranger Ben Black Bear of Rosebud Sioux Tribe Department
of Natural Resources answered the call. Phone # (605) 747-xxxx M-F 8:00-5:00.
I will interview in depth and get permission to release her name and address.
