February and March of 1974
Bill Hoffman
and his wife were on Elk Mountain near Meeker and Medicine Park Wichita
Mountain Wildlife Refuge. They were following a trail to the summit of
a group of three tracks, 13- 15 inches by 6 - 8 inches; and 12-14 inches
by 5 -7 inches and a third track 7-9 inches by 4 inches. It was on a grassy
summit about 4,000 feet elevation, wet; the largest tracks sank an inch
into soil; the middle track about a half-inch deep into the soil and the
smaller track just crushed the grass. Nearby large droppings (filled 12
inch dinner plate size) and some pellets the size of a walnut. It was
dark brown to black. Bark and leaves stripped off trees from about 6 feet
off the ground upwards. Upon descending the summit the informants heard
high pitched barks, yelps and howls and thought he was being followed.
